Bible Quiz-Mail 2002 National Bible Quiz Finals Information
Dear Bible Quiz Leader,
We (Mark Colgan & Mike Hopper) are looking forward to seeing many of you in a little more than a week at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington. We would like to share some additional information about Quiz Finals.
(A) NEW NATIONAL FINALS INFORMATION
- Directions to Seattle Pacific University and maps of the campus can be found at: www.spu.edu/qamaps.asp. Additional registration information is given below.
- Additional information is now available at the web site: www.freemethodistchurch.org/quizzing/02finals. You may want to check out the tentative daily schedule and the teams listed by numbers and divisions.
- There will be telephones in the dorm rooms, so you may want to bring a telephone card to call home, and then those from home may call you directly in your room. In case of an emergency the number for Safety & Security at SPU is: (206) 281-2922 (24 hours).
- Please note that coaches will be responsible for their quizzers' safety and responsible behavior, including bedtimes. If there are quizzers in your dorm that don't have an adult, please supervise them. If you have quizzers from your church that don't have an adult from your church near them in the dorm, you are still expected to supervise them. We need all our adults working together.
- The round robin will run Wednesday and Thursday with the double-elimination tournament on Friday. Individual Finals will be Saturday morning. The dress-up Awards Banquet will be Saturday at noon with final check-out after the banquet.
- There are 21 teams quizzing in the STV-B division. Our time limitations only allow for a 16-team double-elimination tournament on Friday. So, the bottom five teams after the round robin in STV-B will be eliminated from the tournament and will participate in a short consolation bracket.
- If you need to contact Mark Colgan, Mike Hopper, or Paul Stackhouse, please contact us by Sunday, June 16, as we will be leaving for Seattle early that week.
- Please be praying for an outstanding Quiz Finals, where the young people are encouraged in their faith, experience loving Christian fellowship, and are encouraged to continue their study of God's Word. Please pray for the officials and quiz leaders, for safe and efficient travel, and for a spirit of unity among us.
(B) PREVIOUSLY SENT NATIONAL FINALS INFORMATION
- Registration Location-Registration will be from 4:00-6:00 PM Tuesday, June 25 in the Fireside Room of the Student Union Building. There is a circle drive off 3rd Avenue across from the Free Methodist Church. The teams can pull in that circle drive while they register. There is a large grassy area by the circle drive where the quizzers can get out and stretch their legs while their coaches register in the Fireside Room. (No quizzers please in the registration line.) Please try to arrive near 4:00 since it will take some time to get registered, get your quizzers settled into their rooms, and find something to eat near campus before the opening session at 7:30 PM in the Free Methodist Church. The quizmasters meeting will follow at 8:30 PM across the street in the Crawford Music Building, room 211. The activity schedule will soon be posted at the web site.
- Talent Show-The SPU admissions department will have a sign up table at registration for people to sign up for the talent show. Skits, music, or any other talent are encouraged as long as it takes no longer than 5 minutes per group. Please let your quizzers know about this opportunity in case they need to bring a musical instrument or other props.
- Quote Format-We have been asked about the format for the quote questions at Quiz Finals, so here is a clarification. All senior teen rookie, young teen veteran, and young teen rookie quote questions (including individuals) will either be regular chapter and verse quotes or " that begin with" quotes. There will be no "about" quotes in these divisions. In the senior teen veteran divisions (including individuals), all quote questions will either be regular chapter and verse quotes or "about" quotes.
- Please verify your team registration at: /users/quizzing/02finals/teamlist.htm. The team matrix shows which churches have registered teams in each division. You must contact us right away if you have any changes. Your teams will not be able to change after June 5, as we will be making out the round robin schedule.
- Laura Colberg has also provided us with a guide to sightseeing, restaurants, and attractions in the Seattle area. Check out all the exciting options in this guide, which is posted at the web site above.
- Let your parents and church know that they can follow along with the competition on the web page at: /users/quizzing/02finals. Paul Stackhouse will be making daily updates to the page with the results of quizzing and current standings. Also, any updates to the team listing will be found there. Soon the daily schedule and other information will be posted as well, and eventually watch for photos from the event!
- If you would like to nominate a Senior for the Dave Markell Excellence in Attitude award, please submit to us in writing the quizzer's name, church and why you feel they should receive the award. Submit this to Mike or Mark at registration on June 25, or e-mail us now. You can nominate any senior, not just those from your church.
- Make sure each person in your group has a medical form that has been sent to Seattle Pacific University. Additional forms are available at the web site listed above. For attendance at the event we must have a medical form for each person.
- Registration will be from 4:00-6:00 PM Tuesday, June 25. Please try to arrive near 4:00 since it will take some time to get registered, get your quizzers settled into their rooms, and find something to eat near campus before the opening session at 7:30 PM.
- What to Bring and What Not to Bring-Please make sure your quizzers bring a light jacket or sweatshirt, as the evenings are typically cool in Seattle. Pillows, towels and sheets will be provided on-campus. Bring dress clothes for the banquet, and appropriate quizzing and recreational clothing (See next item!). Make sure quizzers do not bring any "water-fight" materials or "fire-works" materials. Coaches will be held responsible if their quizzers are involved in any of these activities. Large stereo systems are also discouraged since we want to keep music levels appropriate.
- Dress Guidelines-Please talk with your quizzers about appropriate dress! We ask girls not to wear low-cut tops, halter tops, spaghetti-string tops, mid-drift tops, or mini-skirts. These have been of particular concern while girls are in a quizzing position. Also, we ask guys not to wear pants that show boxers or briefs, and we ask guys to wear shirts at all times.
- Please DO NOT forget your quiz seats. If you have a broken set, bring them along also as Lyle McCoon, Sr and Bob Mueller will be available to repair sets at no cost. If you have old sets that you are not using and would like to donate them to new teams getting started, please bring those sets to Quiz Finals as well.
- If you need to make any special arrangements, please contact Judy Bruce: phone number is 1-206-281-2187, e-mail is jbruce@spu.edu and fax is 1-206-281-2026.
- On Thursday afternoon you will have an opportunity to buy quiz materials over the gospel of John for next season.
- Please be praying that this event will impact many of these young lives for Christ in ways that we can not even imagine.
May God Bless your ministry through Bible quizzing.
Mike & Mark
